Veolia Transport, which provides vehicles for the City of Espoo’s public transit system, has signed a contract with Chinese car and battery manufacturer BYD which will bring a small number of fully electric buses to Espoo in the near future. The deal will make Espoo the first city in Finland to introduce fully electric, full-size buses into its fleet.

Veolia will pilot the use of these electric buses in the context of the Tekes sponsored ECV project, which explores the requirements of integrating electric buses into public transit systems. Veolia’s piloting of these vehicles in Finland’s harsh climate will also provide BYD with valuable data and experience regarding the applicability of these vehicles to such extreme climate conditions.

The buses will be taken into use sometime later this year on bus lines 11 and 13 in Espoo.
