Several major automakers are now focusing on seizing the full energy conserving potential of electric vehiclesby developing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) solutions to drivers of electric vehicles. V2G technology enables electric vehicle owners to feed excess electricity back in to the power grid for which customer's would be reimbursed. Alternately, the same technology could also be employed to turn an electric vehicle into a generator, able to power a home in cases of power shortages.

While Nissan is currently the only automaker to have announced the release of a V2G solution, scheduled to be available to owners of the Nissan Leaf in Japan later this year, automakers including Mitsubishi and Toyota are also expected to accelerate the development of V2G solutions.
