European Union officials are reportedly placing increasing pressure on developing countries to ensure that they commit to legally binding emissions reduction targets at the coming Durban climate change conference. While major countries such as the United States, Japan, Russia and Canada have ruled out joining a second commitment period of the Kyoto agreement countries such as China and India, which continue to rank among the world’s most significant sources of emissions, have joined the EU in their commitment to extending the Kyoto protocols.
