The European Union announced, in a statement released Tuesday October 4th, 2011, that it supported the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Kyoto Protocol, which is set to expire at the end of 2012, has faced opposition from such major power as the U.S. and China, who continue to remain outside of the Protocol. Several other rich countries have also voiced their opposition to renewing the Protocol, stating that they will refuse to extend the pact unless the U.S. and China agree to join the signatories of the Kyoto Protocol.
