The fifth, bi-annual, Sino-Finnish Innovativeness Forum was held at the Dipoli Congress Centre in Espoo, Finland on Tuesday, September 27th 2011. This forum’s theme was Low-Carbon City Development. This theme was reflected in the presentations and addresses delivered by the group of international speakers present at the forum. These speakers addressed a variety of different aspects of the theme of low-carbon development, ranging from electric vehicles to low-carbon city assessment.

In its wide array of speakers the forum also provided a broad range of perspectives on the theme at hand. Speakers included those from the worlds of commerce, academia and government. Further expanding the forum’s richness of perspectives was its geographic breadth, featuring speakers from Europe as well as Asia.  As a result of this variety of perspectives, the forum was able to provide both a broad introduction to the theme as well as a series of comprehensive and knowledgeable lectures on specific aspects of this broader theme.

Alongside this engaging discussion on the theme of low-carbon development, the forum also served as the platform for the announcement of the World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities (WALCC). The Alliance, initiated by Dr. Johan Wallin (Synocus) and Prof. Kang Feiyu (Tsinghua University), appointed Prof. Kang as its inaugural Chairman, a position which Prof. Kang gratefully accepted and Finland was selected as the location for its home office. Plans for the next phase of the Alliance’s formation were also discussed, including possible locations for the Alliance’s China office as well as early candidates for inaugural member cities.

The forum concluded by setting the stage for the 6th Sino-Finnish Innovativeness Forum, which is to be held in Beijing this coming spring.

Included below is the 5th Forum’s full agenda.
