The Hiriko, a new electric vehicle prototype developed by MIT’s Media Lab in collaboration with a group of seven automotive suppliers in Spain, sets a new standard for urban mobility. The ultra-compact, fully-electric vehicle has been developed with the demands of urban commuters in mind first and foremost. The Hiriko’s unique, collapsible chassis aims to provide commuters with a solution to the inevitable challenge of finding a place to park in modern metropolises where space is at a premium. When folded, three Hiriko’s can fit into a single parking space, a feature which will come in particularly handy for its planned use in car-sharing programs run by city governments, with Berlin and Barcelona among the cities expressing early interest.
