Events - Low Carbon City

Tsinghua University and Synocus Group have developed a new network called the World Alliance of Low Carbon Cities (WALCC). In connection with the WALCC, the 2nd Low Carbon City Development World Forum will be held in Beijing, China on 14th – 15th, May, 2012. This is a high-level conference which will be attended by leading researchers, companies and city delegations with a strong interest in furthering the development of low-carbon cities. The 2nd Low Carbon City Development World Forum also serves as the 6th Sino-Finnish Innovativeness Forum.

Fifth Sino-Finnish Innovativeness Forum

The Fifth Sino-Finnish Innovativeness Forum was held in Espoo, Finland on September 27th.

The bi-annual forum brings together business leaders, government officials and leading researchers to discuss a variety of issues relating to the grand challenges facing our societies today. The Fourth forum was held in Shenzen this past spring (May 12th - 13th), the focus was on Eco-conscious urban living, energy conservation and carbon emissions. The focus of this fifth forum is on the concept of low carbon city development.  The Forum will feature a wide range of speakers ranging from representatives of national governments to leading researchers in the fields of low-carbon technology and electric vehicles.

The Forum's program includes addresses from representatives from Valmet Automotive, Fortum, the City of Espoo and Tekes - the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The Forum's program is divided into four themes, which are: "Eco Urban Living Landscape", "Exploring the potential of EV", "Practice for a better, greener urban life" and "World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities".

The Fourth Sino-Finnish Innovativeness Forum was held in Shenzhen, China from May 12th to May 13th, 2011. The Forum was organized by the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department, the Shenzhen City Science, Technology, Industry, Information & Trade Committee, the Shenzhen City Science and Technology Association and Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation.

The Forum featured addresses from a variety of speakers ranging from Chinese ministry officials to leading researchers from a number of universities.  Speakers included: Mr. Wang Lei(Director of Resource & Environment, the Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, The Ministry of Science and Technology), Mr. Gong Guoping(Deputy Director, Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department), Mr. Zhou Luming (Chairman of Shenzhen Science and Technology Association), Mr. Eero Suominen (Finnish Consul General in Guangzhou), Mr. Raimo Karhu (Federation of Finnish Technology Industries).

The Forum's program addressed a number of issues and themes related to low-carbon development and sustainability.  These topics included: the integration of sustainable practices into municipal and governmental planning, electric vehicle demonstration projects, development of low-carbon technologies as well as discussion of the World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities.

The second Sino-Finnish Innovation Forum was held in September of 2010 at Dipoli in Espoo, Finland. The Forum was a part of the ongoing Eco Urban Living project. Several experts and distinguished guests both from China and Finland participated in the Forum.

The opening speech was held by Mr. Mauri Pekkarinen, Minister of Economic Affairs. Other speakers in the event were among others Dr. Mikko Kosonen, President, Sitra, Ms. Saija Äikäs-Idänpään-Heikkilä, Chairman of the Board, City of Espoo, Prof. Kang Feiyu, Executive Deputy Dean, Shenzhen, Tsinghua University, and  Prof. Heikki Mannila, Vice Rector, Aalto University.
