Aalto University is a newly created university from the merger of three leading Finnish universities: Helsinki School of Economics, University of Art and Design Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology. Together, these institutions, renowned in their respective fields, form an innovative world-class center of multi-disciplinary expertise.

The combination of three universities opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. Aalto University’s ambitious goal is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialized disciplines.

Researchers and experts from Aalto University will contribute to research in the Eco Urban Living project in streams 1, EV Technologies, 5, Market Making Ecosystems, and 6, World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities.

Prof. Jussi Suomela’s research in the EV Technologies stream will focus on EV components, primarily batteries and electric-drive technology. Aalto University’s research and testing activites in the demonstration project will utilize the Universities HybLab research unit’s laboratory facilities and mule-vehicles.

Prof. Robin Gustafsson’s research in stream 5, Market Making Ecosystems, will focus on the properties and mechanisms that enable and impede productive development of new industries and the emergence of technological fields as well as exploring aspects of market making ecosystem that are poorly understood by current theory but are of critical importance to strategic management and innovation policy in the creation of new industries.

Prof. Raine Mäntysalo’s research in stream 6, World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities, will focus on exploring how best to spread the results from a Finnish EV demonstration project to culturally diverse countries. This will include study of ecosystem support theories, indicators used to gauge progress and feedback regarding the efficacy of suggested measures.
